Plant-assisted green preparation of silver nanoparticles using leaf extract of Dalbergia sissoo and their antioxidant, antibacterial and catalytic applications.

Plant-mediated preparation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is thought to be a more economical and environmentally benign process in comparison to physical and chemical synthesis methods. In the present study, the aqueous leaf extract of Dalbergia sissoo was prepared and utilized to reduce silver ion (Ag+) during the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (DL-AgNPs). The formation of DL-AgNPs was verified using UV-Vis spectra, exhibiting the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at around 450nm. FT-IR analysis revealed the kinds of phytochemicals that serve as reducing and capping agents while DL-AgNPs are being synthesized. Analysis of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) images verified the development of spherical and oval-shaped DL-AgNPs, with sizes ranging from 10 to 25nm. The stability and particle size distribution of synthesized DL-AgNPs were ensured by zeta potential and DLS (dynamic light scattering) investigations. Additionally, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the crystalline nature of DL-AgNPs. In antioxidant experiments, DL-AgNPs demonstrated significant scavenging capacities of DPPH and ABTS radicals with EC50 values of 51.32 and 33.32μg/mL, respectively. The antibacterial activity of DL-AgNPs was shown to be significant against harmful bacteria, with a maximum zone of inhibition (21.5 ± 0.86mm) against Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, DL-AgNPs exhibited effective catalytic activity to degrade environment-polluting dyes (methylene blue, methyl orange, and Congo red) and toxic chemicals (p-nitrophenol). The results of all these studies suggested that DL-AgNPs made from the leaf extract of Dalbergia sissoo have merit for application in the environmental and biomedical fields.

An exhaustive exploration of Zn0.15Sn0.85(Se0.95S0.05)2 crystal-based photodetector and its potential application as a photocatalytic material

The research pioneers the exploration of synthesized quaternary Zn0.15Sn0.85(Se0.95S0.05)2 (ZSSS) crystals, demonstrating remarkable efficacy as optoelectronic switching devices and potent photocatalysts. The ZSSS photodetector recorded a stable photoresponse with remarkable rapid rise and decay times. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model was used to look at the photocatalytic activity at different methylene blue concentrations. The researchers grew highly pure ZSSS crystals using the direct vapour transport (DVT) method. Field effect scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images reveal the layer growth mechanism in the grown crystals. The structural analyses of the grown crystals were carried out using an X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern and temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy. The Lorentzian function was fitted to experimental data to carry out the temperature-dependent Raman analysis. The grown crystals exhibit a direct optical bandgap of 1.69 eV. The electrical analyses explain the semiconducting nature of the crystals.

A Facile Green Synthesis of Photoluminescent Carbon Dots using Pumpkin seeds for Ultra-Sensitive Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions Detection in Living Cells

A facile and efficient green synthesis of photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs) was achieved using pumpkin seeds (PS) through the hydrothermal-carbonization method. Pumpkin seeds, well-known for their nutrient-rich composition, offer potential health benefits, including heightened fertility, enhanced heart health, and improved blood sugar regulation. The as-synthesized PS-CDs characterization through UV–vis, photoluminescence (PL), FTIR, XRD, and HR(TEM) analysis. The PL PS-CDs exhibited an excitation-dependent behavior, with the peak shifting from 410 nm to 475 nm under excitation wavelengths ranging from 270 nm to 400 nm. Notably, the synthesized PS-CDs displayed outstanding advantages, such as a high fluorescent quantum yield of 12.7% with bright blue emissions when exposed to UV light at 365 nm. High-resolution TEM images revealed an average size of approximately 4.0 ± 0.2 nm for the synthesized PS-CDs, ranging from 2 to 7 nm with interlayer distance of 0.21 nm. PL spectra of PS-CDs solution, with an excitation wavelength of 338 nm and emission wavelength of 420 nm, were examined in the presence of various metal ions (50 μM). The fluorescence lifetime of the PS-CDs showed an exponential curve, with an average lifetime (τav) of 8.47 ns for Cu2+ and 3.61 ns for Fe3+ ions, respectively, which is strongly indicates that quenching occurs through a static mechanism. The PS-CDs exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity towards Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions, with a linear relationship observed up to a concentration of 50 μM and detection limits of 0.43 and 0.11 μM (S/N=3), respectively. Moreover, the low-toxicity and strongly fluorescent PS-CDs were successfully applied for cell imaging. The practical utility of the developed sensor was determined through the analysis of Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions in spiked water samples, highlighting its considerable analytical and bioanalytical applications.

Biofabrication of Silver Nanoparticles Using Green Seaweed: Characterisation and Antibacterial Evaluation

This study investigates the Chaetomorpha antennina (CA) seaweed-mediated biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The synthesis process of silver nanoparticles was monitored over time with the help of an Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer and further characterisation studies were also performed. Differential Light Scattering (DLS) measurements revealed a mean particle size of approximately 103.5nm and a mean zeta potential value of -57.5mV for AgNPs. The spherical shape and size of the AgNPs were confirmed through High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) imaging, while Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDAX) analysis provided insights into the elemental composition. The concentration of AgNPs was estimated using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). The antibacterial potential of AgNPs was evaluated against both gram-positive (Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and gram-negative bacterial strains (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Shigella dysentriae, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus mirabilis) using the agar well diffusion method. From the results, AgNPs exhibited significant antibacterial activity against B. subtilis and S. typhi among all the tested concentration levels (25, 50, 75 and 100μl).

Green and sustainable use of macadamia nuts as support material in Pt-based direct methanol fuel cells

The successful commercialization of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) is hindered by inadequate methanol oxidation activity and anode catalyst longevity. Efficient and cost-effective electrode materials are imperative in the widespread use of DMFCs. While Platinum (Pt) remains the primary component of anodic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) electrocatalysts, its utilization alone in DMFC systems is limited due to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, instability, methanol crossover, and high cost. These limitations impede the economic feasibility of Pt as an electrocatalyst. Herein, we present the use of powdered activated carbon (PAC) and granular activated carbon (GAC), both sourced from macadamia nut shells (MNS), a type of biomass. These bio-based carbon materials are integrated into hybrid supports with reduced graphene oxide (rGO), aiming to enhance the performance and reduce the production cost of the Pt electrocatalyst. Electrochemical and physicochemical characterizations of the synthesized catalysts, including Pt-rGO/PAC-1:1, Pt-rGO/PAC-1:2, Pt-rGO/GAC-1:1, and Pt-rGO/GAC-1:2, were conducted. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed crystallite sizes ranging from 1.18 nm to 1.68 nm. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images with average particle sizes ranging from 1.91 nm to 2.72 nm demonstrated spherical dispersion of Pt nanoparticles with some agglomeration across all catalysts. The electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) was determined, with Pt-rGO/GAC-1:1 exhibiting the highest ECSA of 73.53 m2 g−1. Despite its high ECSA, Pt-rGO/GAC-1:1 displayed the lowest methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) current density, indicating active sites with poor catalytic efficiency. Pt-rGO/PAC-1:1 and Pt-rGO/PAC-1:2 exhibited the highest MOR current densities of 0.77 mA*cm−2 and 0.74 mA*cm−2, respectively. Moreover, Pt-rGO/PAC-1:2 and Pt-rGO/PAC-1:1 demonstrated superior electrocatalytic mass (specific) activities of 7.55 mA/mg (0.025 mA*cm−2) and 7.25 mA/mg (0.021 mA*cm−2), respectively. Chronoamperometry tests revealed Pt-rGO/PAC-1:2 and Pt-rGO/PAC-1:1 as the most stable catalysts. Additionally, they exhibited the lowest charge transfer resistances and highest MOR current densities after durability tests, highlighting their potential for DMFC applications. The synthesized Pt supported on PACs hybrids demonstrated remarkable catalytic performance, stability, and CO tolerance, highlighting their potential for enhancing DMFC efficiency.

Multifunctional platform for future applications in cell and tissue engineering based on silicate phosphate hydroxyapatite co-doped with Li+, Eu3+ and Gd3+ ions

Although hydroxyapatite has established itself as a promising biomaterial for the simultaneous diagnosis and treatment of bone defects, several physicochemical properties can be further refined to achieve a specialized theranostic platform for cell and tissue engineering. In this context, we synthesized silicate-substituted hydroxyapatites co-doped with Li+, Eu3+, and Gd3+ ions (abbr. as Si-HAp-LEG) using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The aim was to create a combination of dopants to stimulate bone regeneration (Li+ ion) while enabling bioimaging (Eu3+ and Gd3+ ions). Structural and morphological assessments included, e.g., XRPD (X-ray Powder Diffraction), HR-TEM (High-resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy) imaging, and BET (Brauner-Emmet-Teller) analysis. Unit-cell parameters were estimated via Rietveld refinement. The luminescence properties (emission, excitation spectra, and emission kinetics) were recorded depending on the varying Li+-ion concentration. The cytocompatibility of biomaterials was tested using hBMSCs (multipotent human bone-marrow mesenchymal stromal cells). In vitro assays evaluated biomaterials’ effects on morphology, metabolic activity (Alamar blue assay), and transcriptomic activity (RT-qPCR). The results indicate that co-doping with Li+, Eu3+, and Gd3+ ions introduces distortions while preserving the crystal structure of hydroxyapatite. Additionally, the cells maintained proper morphology and ultrastructure, internalizing biomaterials without significant cytotoxicity. The biomaterials also triggered the expression of key transcriptional factors. Si-HAp-LEG biomaterials, particularly LEG-222 and LEG-221, exhibit desired physicochemical and biological features, rendering them highly bioactive and promising for cell and tissue engineering applications.

A deconvolution analysis strategy on the thermoreconstitution process of Co/Fe layered double hydroxides: Complementary correlations between physicochemical variations and thermokinetic analyses

A variety of physicochemical analyses were systematically conducted on the complex thermoreconstitution process of Co/Fe layered double hydroxides, and deconvolution analysis strategy was utilized in elucidating the reconstitution process. The thermal analysis of Co/Fe layered double hydroxides indicated that approximately 27.8 % weight loss, three weight loss peaks and two pronounced endothermic phenomena were detected via thermogravimetry, differential thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. In the thermoreconstitution process of Co/Fe layered double hydroxides, scanning electron microscopy images indicated that the layered structure gradually collapsed, fractured into pieces, and partially melted. Meanwhile, significant X-ray diffraction peak broadening phenomena were detected and further confirmed by the d-spacing values in high-resolution transmission electron microscope images, which were mainly caused by the lattice expansion effect and the heterogeneous microstrain effect. Three reactions were deconvolved from the differential thermogravimetry curves, and the thermokinetic models of Reaction 2 indicated that volatile components in the form of H2O and CO2 escaped from the solid-state residuals via a one-dimensional diffusion reaction model. The major products in solid-state residuals were cubic Cobalt(III) oxide and Iron(II, III) oxide. The thermokinetic models played a complementary role in elucidating the physicochemical variations that occurred throughout the thermoreconstitution process of Co/Fe layered double hydroxides.

Structural, morphological, and EMI shielding evaluations of Sm-Mn co-doped Sr-based M-type hexaferrite for Ku band applications

High-performance, thin, and lightweight EMI (Electromagnetic interference) materials with outstanding shielding effectiveness were explored over the last years to solve the problems in electronic devices. Magnetic absorbing materials have extensive bandwidth, good impedance matching, and excellent absorption features. In the present study, Sm-Mn Sr-doped M hexaferrites with Sr1-xSmxFe12-yMnyO19 whereas (x= 0.00, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, y = 0.00, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) were prepared by the chemical route. XRD, FESEM, HRTEM, FTIR, VSM, and VNA are used to evaluate the properties of the Sm-Mn doped Sr-based M-type hexagonal ferrite. The XRD (X-ray diffraction) results revealed the presence of a hexagonal phase in the prepared samples. Rietveld refinement also confirmed the phase purity for the Sm-Mn doped Sr-based M-type hexagonal ferrites. The FESEM (Field emission scanning electron microscopy) and HRTEM (High-resolution transmission electron microscopy) images revealed the hexagon-type shapes of the particles in the Sm-Mn doped Sr-based M-type hexagonal ferrites. The FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) spectra showed the 446 to 620 cm-1 lines, confirming the presence of the tetrahedral and octahedral phases of hexagonal ferrites. Dielectric and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (SE) parameters are evaluated for Sm-Mn doped Sr-based M-type hexagonal ferrite. The electromagnetic parameters, such as complex refractive index, absorption and impedance, are also investigated for the Sm-Mn doped Sr-based hexagonal ferrite powder with x=0.075, y=0.75 having epoxy resin with 20wt%, 30wt% and 50wt% samples, respectively. SE parameters are higher at more extensive filler loading. The green shielding index was found higher for Sm-Mn doped Sr-based hexagonal ferrite powder with x=0.075, y=0.75 having 20wt% epoxy resin and decreased with filler loading. It is found the epoxy/Sm-Mn doped Sr-based M-type hexagonal ferrites-based composites are excellent absorbers in the Ku band. The investigated absorbers could be the best candidates for next-generation EMI green shielding absorbing devices and applications.

Effect of oxidation temperature on physical properties of polycrystalline β-Ga2O3 grown by thermal oxidation of GaN in O2 ambient from 900 to 1400 °C

This study aimed to investigate the effect of oxidation temperature on the physical properties of β-Ga2O3 grown by thermal oxidation of GaN in the O2 ambient at high oxidation temperatures from 900 to 1400 °C. Notably, the analysis of the oxidation temperatures ranging from 1100 to 1400 °C remains unexplored in the other studies. The effects of the oxidation temperature on the physical properties were investigated via X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). At all oxidation temperatures, XPS results revealed oxygen deficiency. The top FESEM images indicated disordered nanocolumn structures on the surface of the oxide layer, which increased in abundance with oxidation temperatures exceeding 1100 °C. Energy-filtered high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images and the selected area electron diffraction patterns revealed that the top nanocolumns and the oxidized layer comprised polycrystalline β-Ga2O3. Additionally, the cross-sectional lamellae prepared through focused ion beam milling revealed an increase in the thickness of the β-Ga2O3 layer with oxidation temperature. To account for the variations in the oxide layer thickness, the oxidation temperatures were classified into two ranges of 900–1100 °C and 1100–1400 °C for calculating the activation energy. Moreover, this study assumed that the activation energy required for the oxidation process remained constant within each temperature interval. According to Arrhenius's model, the activation energy from 900 to 1100 °C was calculated to be 286.15 kJ/mol (2.97 eV). Furthermore, the activation energy from 1100 to 1400 °C was determined to be 111.33 kJ/mol (1.15 eV).

Direct observation and quantification of nanosecond laser induced amorphization inside silicon

The nature of structural changes of nanosecond laser modification inside silicon is investigated. Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy measurements of cross sections of the modified channels reveal highly localized crystal deformation. Raman spectroscopy measurements prove the existence of amorphous silicon inside nanosecond laser induced modifications, and the percentage of amorphous silicon is calculated based on the Raman spectrum. For the first time, the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images directly show the appearance of amorphous silicon inside nanosecond laser induced modifications, which corroborates the indirect measurements from Raman spectroscopy. The laser modified channel consists of a small amount of amorphous silicon embedded in a disturbed crystal structure accompanied by strain. This finding may explain the origin of the positive refractive index change associated with the written channels that may serve as optical waveguides.

The Incorporation of Graphene Nanoplatelets in Tung Oil-Urea Formaldehyde Microcapsules: A Paradigm Shift in Physicochemical Enhancement.

Tung oil (TO) microcapsules (MCs) with a poly(urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) shell were synthesized via one-step in situ polymerization, with the addition of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) (1-5 wt. %). The synergistic effects of emulsifiers between gelatin (gel) and Tween 80 were observed, with gel chosen to formulate the MCs due to its enhanced droplet stability. SEM images then displayed an increased shell roughness of the TO-GNP MCs in comparison to the pure TO MCs due to the GNP species on the shell. At the same time, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images also confirmed the presence of GNPs on the outer layer of the MCs, with the stacked graphene layers composed of 5-7 layers with an interlayer distance of ~0.37 nm. Cross-sectional TEM imaging of the MCs also confirmed the successful encapsulation of the GNPs in the core of the MCs. Micromanipulation measurements displayed that the 5% GNPs increased the toughness by 71% compared to the pure TO MCs, due to the reduction in the fractional free volume of the core material. When the MCs were dispersed in an epoxy coating and applied on a metallic substrate, excellent healing capacities of up to 93% were observed for the 5% GNP samples, and 87% for the pure TO MC coatings. The coatings also exhibited excellent corrosion resistance for all samples up to 7 days, with the GNP samples offering a more strenuous path for the corrosive agents.

Linker-free Functionalization of Phosphorene Nanosheets by Sialic Acid Biomolecules.

The importance of sialic acid on cell functions has been recently unveiled, and consequently, great attention has been paid to its interaction with tumor cells. In this line of research, we have realized phosphorene nanosheets functionalized with sialic acid molecules for biological applications with no need for another linker molecule. The formation of phosphorene sheets is feasible by using hydrogen plasma treatment and conversion of amorphous phosphorus on silicon substrates into highly crystalline nanosheets. Through immersion of these freshly prepared nanosheets into an aqueous solution containing sialic acid molecules, the formation of chemical binding between biomolecules and P atoms is initiated to form a carpet-like coverage. We have studied these structures by using Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy, FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. While XPS supports the passivation of sialic-activated phosphorene nanosheets (SAP) against oxidation in air or aqueous solutions, the FTIR analysis corroborates the evolution of P-O-C and P-C bonds between such biomolecules and the sheet surface. Moreover, the high-resolution TEM images demonstrate a considerable reduction in the lattice spacing from 0.32 nm for pristine phosphorene to 0.30 nm. Similarly, Raman spectroscopy depicts a shift in A2g in-plane vibrations, owing to the evolution of stress in the passivated sheets. To investigate their biocompatibility, we examined the toxicity of these bioactivated structures and observed no or little sign of toxicity. For the latter evaluation, we exploited MTT, flow cytometry, and animal models for in vivo investigations.

Characterization of Mn5Ge3 Contacts on a Shallow Ge/SiGe Heterostructure.

Mn5Ge3 is a ferromagnetic phase of the Mn-Ge system that is a potential contact material for efficient spin injection and detection. Here, we investigate the creation of Mn5Ge3-based contacts on a Ge/SiGe quantum well heterostructure via solid-state synthesis. X-ray diffraction spectra fitting indicates the formation of Mn5Ge3-based contacts on bulk Ge and Ge/SiGe. High-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy verify the correct Mn5Ge3-based phase formation. Schottky diode measurements, transmission line measurements, and Hall measurements reveal that Mn5Ge3-based contacts serve as good p-type contacts for Ge/SiGe quantum well heterostructures due to having a low Schottky barrier height of 0.10eV (extracted from a Mn5Ge3/n-Ge analogue) and a contact resistance in the order of 1 kΩ. Furthermore, we show that these electrical characteristics have a gate-voltage dependence, thereby providing tunability.

Facile synthesis of lanthanum carbonate octahydrate and lanthanum oxide nanoparticles by sonochemical method: systematic characterizations

Abstract This study could present the size and morphology of two synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) by observing their smallest possible dimensions. Lanthanum carbonate nanoparticles were synthesized by sonochemical method through the interaction of lanthanum acetate hydrate and sodium carbonate in an aqueous medium with a probe sonicator. After rigorous washing followed by drying, the La2(CO3)3·8H2O(S1) NPs were calcined at a temperature of 600 °C to obtain lanthanum oxide nanoparticles (S2). Both NPs were characterised through various instrumental techniques. PXRD study showed orthorhombic with space group of Pccn (56) and hexagonal phases with space group of P 3 ‾ m 1 $P\overline{3}m1$ (164) for S1 and S2 respectively whose morphology and elemental analysis were studied through FESEM and EDX. High resolution TEM image of La2(CO3)3·8H2O and La2O3 showed spherical shapes of the nanoparticles. Further study of XPS and FTIR conveyed detailed information of both nanoparticles whose TGA-DSC showed three step decomposition curves. Novel Nanocomposites for Luminescent Thermometry with Two Different Modalities.

In this work, we successfully integrated fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) and lanthanide ion-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) in a nanocomposite structure for simultaneous optical temperature sensing. The effective integration of FND and UCNP shells was confirmed by employing high-resolution TEM imaging, X-ray diffraction, and dual-excitation optical spectroscopy. Furthermore, the synthesized ND@UCNP nanocomposites were tested by making simultaneous optical temperature measurements, and the detected temperatures showed excellent agreement within their sensitivity limit. The simultaneous measurement of temperature using two different modalities having different sensing physics but with the same composite nanoparticles inside is expected to greatly improve the confidence of nanoscale temperature measurements. This should resolve some of the controversy surrounding nanoscale temperature measurements in biological applications.

Photocatalytic degradation of textile dye with titanium (IV) doped tungsten oxide nanoparticles

Water pollution from textile industries is a major concern with respect to the availability of clean drinking water. The removal of textile (organic) dyes through photocatalytic degradation with pure WO3 and titanium (IV) doped tungsten oxide [Ti (IV)-WO3] nanospheres were studied under visible light. The WO3 and Ti (IV)-WO3 nanospheres were synthesized via microwave-assisted method at microwave power of 160 W for the duration of 20 mins. The as synthesised WO3 and Ti (IV)-WO3 nanospheres were characterized for their structural, microstructural, and spectroscopic properties by using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The X-ray diffractograms confirmed the formation of highly pure WO3 and Ti (IV)-WO3 nanospheres. The average crystallite size of WO3 and Ti (IV)-WO3 nanospheres were calculated as 53.37 nm and 35.24 nm respectively using Debye Scherrer equation. The bandgap of Ti (IV)-WO3 was found to be decreased to 2.5 eV from 3.2 eV (WO3) respectively. It can be deduced that Ti (IV)-WO3 can be utilized as efficient visible light (λ>420 nm) driven photocatalyst as the bandgap was < 3 eV. The agglomerated spherical nanoparticles were seen for WO3 and Ti (IV)-WO3 in the HR-TEM images. The photocatalytic activity of textile dye was analyzed by UV-Vis spectrophotometer under visible light. The photocatalytic organic dye degradation was investigated. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of titanium (IV) doped tungsten oxide (10 wt%) was observed to be ~100% in 100 mins. This makes titanium (IV) doped tungsten oxide nanospheres, a potential nanomaterial for water purification.

Growth optimization, optical, and dielectric properties of heteroepitaxially grown ultrawide-bandgap ZnGa2O4 (111) thin film

Ultrawide bandgap ZnGa2O4 (ZGO) thin films were grown on sapphire (0001) substrates at various growth temperatures with a perspective to investigate the electrical and optical characteristics required for high-power electronic applications. Due to the variation in the vapor pressure of Zn and Ga, severe loss of Zn was observed during pulsed laser deposition, which was solved by using a zinc-rich Zn0.98Ga0.02O target. A pure phase single-crystalline ZGO thin film was obtained at a deposition temperature of 750 °C and an oxygen pressure of 1 × 10−2 Torr. The out-of-plane epitaxial relationship between the sapphire and ZGO thin film was obtained from φ-scan. The x-ray rocking curve of the ZGO thin film grown at 750 °C exhibits a full width at half maximum of ∼0.098°, which indicates a good crystalline phase and quality of the thin film. Core-level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of ZGO grown at 750 °C indicated that Zn and Ga were in the 2+ and 3+ oxidation states, respectively, and the atomic ratio of Zn/Ga was estimated to be ∼0.48 from the fitted values of Zn-2p3/2 and Ga-2p3/2. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images revealed a sharp interface with the thickness of the ZGO film of ∼265 nm, and the signature of minor secondary phases was observed. The bandgap of the ZGO film at different growth temperatures was calculated from the ultraviolet-diffuse reflectance spectroscopy spectra, and its value was obtained to be ∼5.08 eV for the 750 °C grown sample. The refractive index (n) and the extinction coefficient (k) were determined to be ∼1.94 and 0.023 from the ellipsometric data, respectively, and the real dielectric function (ɛr) was estimated to be ∼6.8 at energy 5 eV. The ultrawide bandgap and dielectric function of ZGO recommend its possible potential applications in deep-ultraviolet optoelectronic devices and high-power electronics.

In-Situ Flame-Synthesized Carbon Nanomaterials via an Impinging Swirl Flow with an N-Butanol Pool

ABSTRACT This study aims to investigate the impact of flow rotation and oxygen concentration on the synthesis of carbon nanomaterials using n-butanol diffusion flames in a rotating stagnation flow with a liquid pool and a catalytic Ni substrate. With increasing angular velocity (ω), the diffusion flame shifts slightly toward the upper oxidizer nozzle, experiences a lower strain rate, and becomes stronger with a higher maximum flame temperature at a fixed oxygen concentration (ΩO). Meanwhile, the soot layer thickens and gradually turns yellowish. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) analyses confirm that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can only be fabricated at ω = 2 or 3 rps when ΩO = 21%, highlighting the critical role of flow rotation. Interestingly, the optimal positions for CNT synthesis consistently occur at the same sampling position (1.5 mm below the upper edge of the blue flame) for all values of oxygen concentration (ΩO). The corresponding temperature ranges for ΩO = 19%, 18%, and 17% are approximately 950°C, 820–920°C, and 800–850°C, respectively, which align with existing literature. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images reveal both typical straight tubular and bamboo-like CNT structures. Raman spectra indicate superior graphitization at high angular velocities (ω). Notably, at ω = 0 rps, the intensity ratio of the D- and G-bands is greater than 1 (ID/IG >1); however, as ω increases, the opposite holds (ID/IG <1), with its value gradually decreasing. This suggests that the swirl effect enhances graphite layer crystallization. Importantly, the strain rate controlled by flow rotation significantly influences CNT fabrication, considering both residence time and carbon source. The key finding of this study is that swirl flow enhances both the quality and quantity of CNTs synthesized via n-butanol diffusion flames.

Characterization of nanostructure of naturally occurring disordered sp2 carbon by impedance spectroscopy

We analyzed main structural models of sp2 carbon with a structure similar to glassy carbon from the point of view of impedance spectroscopy in the range from hertz frequencies to 15 MHz. We used samples of natural carbon (shungites, anthraxolites) with a structure and properties close to synthetic glassy carbon. The impedance spectroscopy results were compared to high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images, which revealed a complex nanoscale structure including stacks of misoriented graphene layers, multilayer ribbons, and closed fullerene-like structures. The high locality of the HRTEM method often does not allow identifying the predominant nano-sized structure if two or more types of structural elements are observed in one sample. Using impedance spectroscopy, we found samples with an inductive type of resistance indicating predominant extended and tortuous elements (ribbons, fibrils), as well as samples with a capacitive type of resistance with a significant predominance of nano-sized stacks of graphene layers with impurities/dielectric gaps and micropores.

A facile, environmentally-benign, green and a novel synthesis of tert-butyl-quinolines by using Fe3O4-MWCNT@CeO2 as recyclable catalyst

The aim of the present work is to examine the catalytic activity of ceria (CeO2) supported on a nano-composite of iron oxide and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Fe3O4-MWCNT). A simple impregnation protocol was used to synthesize Fe3O4-MWCNT@CeO2 nano-composite, and a diversity of analytical techniques (including XRD, BET, TGA, SEM, TEM, and EDS) were used to thoroughly describe the catalyst material. The CeO2 supported on Fe3O4-MWCNT were found to be uniformly distributed throughout the nano-composite, irregular spherical in shape, and ranged in size from 5 to 15 nm, according to high-resolution TEM image. Afterwards, the synthesis of novel tert-butyl-quinoline analogues via a multi-component condensation comprising substituted aldehydes, dimedone, 3°-butylacetoacetate, and NH4OAc was used to evaluate the catalytic performance of the Fe3O4-MWCNT@CeO2 nano-composite. Their large specific surface area, porosity, unique exposed surfaces, and stability all contribute to their effectiveness. The catalyst's extremely active surfaces are highlighted by the notably high turn-over frequency. Thus, using ethanol as the green solvent, we suggest an effective and reusable catalytic approach that works at mild reaction condition with excellent product yields (90–97 %). This makes that nano-composite inexpensive, safe for the environment, and very atom-efficient. When compared to existing commercial approaches, our protocol is found to be more sustainable and efficient.
